August and Summer 2018

Weather Report – August and Summer 2018

In Plymtree the very warm and sunny weather that predominated throughout May, June and July continued into the first week of August. However, from the 8th and for the remainder of the month it became somewhat cooler and cloudier at times with some rain, although apart from on the 11th, 15th and 26th, amounts were generally small. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 58.6mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 73.8mm. This means that we received 79% of the Dunkeswell average. The total summer (Jun, Jul and Aug) rainfall I recorded was 106.0mm which compares to an average of 206.6mm at Dunkeswell or only 51% of average. The wettest day of August was the 11th with 26.5mm, with most of the rain falling overnight on the 11th-12th (measurements are made at 0900GMT and the figure attributed to the previous day). There were 8 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 10.4 days for Dunkeswell but 17 days with measureable rainfall. The highest temperature I recorded during August was 29.6°C on the 6th. The lowest temperature of the month, 3.7°C, was recorded on the 25th. The highest temperature for the summer was recorded on the 8th July with a maximum of 33.3°C .The lowest temperature for the summer was that recorded in the early hours of the 25th August when the temperature fell to 3.7°C. The strongest wind during August occurred during the afternoon of the day of the 11th when a gust of 24.4mph was recorded.

(Please note because of the heavy rainfall on the 11th the axis on the graph below has changed from that normally shown: i.e. 0-30mm rather than 0-25mm).
