February 2018 & Winter

Weather Report – February 2018 and Winter 2017/18

In Plymtree February was a much drier month compared to January. Apart from around the middle of the month it was also rather cold and especially so during the last few days. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 41.1mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 82.7mm. This means that we received 50% of the Dunkeswell average. The wettest day of February was the 14th with 9.0mm. There were 11 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 11.9 days for Dunkeswell. Snow grains were observed on the 6th, some of the showers were wintery on the 11th and there were a few snow flurries on the 27th. Of course the main snow event did not occur until 1 March. More on that next month. The total winter (Dec, Jan and Feb) rainfall I recorded was 244.0mm which compares to an average of 316.4mm at Dunkeswell or only 77% of average. The highest temperature I recorded during February was 11.0°C on the 17th and 19th. On the 28th the temperature did not rise above 0.0°C. The highest temperature of the winter, 14.0°C, was recorded on the 23rd January. The lowest temperature for February was -7.6°C on the 28th. This was also the lowest temperature of the winter. The strongest wind during February occurred during the early hours of the 13th when a gust of 38.0mph was recorded by Pete Draper at Normans Green. The strongest winds for the winter as a whole recorded by Pete were 45.6mph during the evening of the 2nd January and the morning of the 4th January, recorded on both days.
