Weather Report – January 2018
In Plymtree the unsettled weather during December 2017 continued throughout most of January. However, like December daily rainfall totals were generally not significant with only 1 day when the total exceeded 10mm. Some of the showers on the 16th and 17th were wintery but nothing lay. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 97.9mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 112.5mm. This means that we received 87% of the Dunkeswell average. The wettest day of January was the 21st with 15.0mm. There were 20 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 15.6 days for Dunkeswell, and only 6 days with no measurable rainfall. The highest temperature I recorded during January was 14.0°C on the 23rd. The lowest temperature, -5.3°C was recorded on the 12th. Like December it was generally quite a windy month and there were 19 days when a gust of more than 20mph was recorded by Pete Draper at Normans Green. The strongest wind during January occurred during the evening of the 2nd and the morning of the 4th when a gust of 45.6 mph was recorded on both days by Pete Draper. The strongest wind I recorded was a gust of 26.4mph on the 20th.
[The difference arises because my wind speed is measured at a height of about 6' in the shelter of my back garden and Pete’s on the roof of his house and exposed to the elements].
