Weather Report – July 2017
In Plymtree the first 10 days of July were dry and very warm, sometimes hot. However, from the 11th the weather changed and became much more unsettled, in particular from the 18th for the rest of the month. On the 18th there was a thunderstorm in the afternoon and again overnight on the 18th/19th, when most of the rainfall for that day was recorded. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 86.9mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 66.8mm. This means that we received 130% of the Dunkeswell average. A complete contrast to July 2016 when there was only 22% of the Dunkeswell average. The wettest day of the month was the 11th with 24.5mm. There were 12 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 10.2 days for Dunkeswell. It was generally a warm month with most days having maximum temperatures above 21°C (70°F). The highest temperature I recorded during July was 30.4°C on the 6th. There were a few nights when the temperatures fell below 10°C. However, overnight on the 18th/19th the temperature didn’t fall below 16.8 °C (62.2°F). The lowest temperature, 7.5°C was recorded on the 23rd. The strongest wind during July occurred during the late morning of the 21st when a gust of 33.6mph was recorded by Pete Draper at Normans Green.
