Weather Report – February 2017 and Winter 2016/17
In Plymtree February started where January left off, with generally unsettled weather. However, from the 7th onwards there were many more dry days and amounts of rainfall were generally small. Snow fell on the 11th but didn’t amount to much. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 63.0mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 82.7mm. This means that we received 76% of the Dunkeswell average. Of the total rainfall for the month 44.0mm fell in the first 6 days. The wettest day of February was the 3rd with 18.0mm. There were 15 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 11.9 days for Dunkeswell. The total winter (Dec, Jan and Feb) rainfall I recorded was 162.4mm which compares to an average of 316.4mm at Dunkeswell or only 51% of average. The highest temperature I recorded during February was 14.8°C on the 20th and this was also the highest temperature of the winter. The lowest temperature for February was -3.8°C on the 6th. The lowest temperature, -8.1°C, was recorded on the 3rd January. The strongest wind during February occurred during the morning of the 23rd, in association with storm Doris, when a gust of 41.2mph was recorded by Pete Draper at Normans Green. The strongest wind I recorded was also on the 23rd with a gust of 32.2mph. This was also the date of the strongest winds for the winter as a whole.
[Correction: the total rainfall for the winter 2015/16 should have been 332.2mm or 105% of the Dunkeswell average, rather than 269.7mm or 85% of the average as stated in my February 2016 report].
