August and Summer 2016

Weather Report – August and Summer 2016

In Plymtree following the very dry July it was all change on the 1st August when 24.5mm of rain was recorded. However, apart from small amounts of rain on the 2nd and 3rd it was then completely dry for the next 13 days. After this the weather was mixed with some rain but on the whole amounts were generally small. It was even a warm sunny day on the Bank Holiday Monday for the Country Fayre, making up for the washout in 2015. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 47.8mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 73.8mm. This means that we received only 65% of the Dunkeswell average. The total summer (Jun, Jul and Aug) rainfall I recorded was 138.9mm which compares to an average of 206.6mm at Dunkeswell or 67% of average. The wettest day of August was indeed the 1st with 24.5mm. There were only 7 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 10.4 days for Dunkeswell. The highest temperature I recorded during August was 26.6°C on the 6th. On the 7th the minimum temperature did not fall below 18.0°C. However, 2 days later, the lowest temperature of the month, 5.6°C, was recorded. The highest temperature for the summer was recorded on the 19th July with a maximum of 30.8°C .The lowest temperature was recorded in the early hours of the 13th July when the temperature fell to 5.2°C .The strongest wind during August occurred during the middle of the day of the 20th when a gust of 29.8mph was recorded.
