Weather Report – February 2016 and Winter 2015/16
In Plymtree, February, like the rest of the UK, it was a month of 2 halves with most of the rain falling in the first half of the month. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 89.6mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 82.7mm. This means that we received 108% of the Dunkeswell average. Of the total rainfall for the month 70.0mm fell in the first 15 days. The wettest day of February was the 6th with 23.0mm. There were 16 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 11.9 days for Dunkeswell. The total winter (Dec, Jan and Feb) rainfall I recorded was 269.7mm which compares to an average of 316.4mm at Dunkeswell or 85% of average. Although South West England and South Wales as a whole received above average rainfall (151%), because the totals were greater over South Wales, our total was below average. The highest temperature I recorded during February was 15.6°C on the 21st and this was also the highest temperature of the winter (Exeter Airport recorded a maximum temperature of 16.0°C on the same day). The lowest temperature for February was -7.2°C on the 16th and this was also my lowest recorded temperature of the winter. Unfortunately Pete Draper’s weather station is currently out of action so no wind measurements are currently available. My strongest recorded wind for February was 22.4mph on the 9th. However, this will be an underestimate as my anemometer is sheltered when winds are from the south west.
