August and Summer 2015

Weather Report – August and Summer 2015

In Plymtree August continued in the same vain as July with spells of the unsettled weather interspersed with a few short dry periods. Not good conditions for harvesting. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 157.1mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 73.8mm. This means that we received 213% of the Dunkeswell average, making up for the drier months earlier in the year. The total summer (Jun, Jul and Aug) rainfall I recorded was 285.5mm which compares to an average of 206.6mm at Dunkeswell or 138% of average. The wettest day of August was the 13th with 41.0mm (0900 on 13th to 0900 on 14th). However, the 24 hour total for this rainfall event was 47.5mm, as it spanned 2 rainfall days. A thunderstorm occurred during the afternoon of the 22nd. There were 15 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 10.4 days for Dunkeswell. The highest temperature I recorded during August was 26.0°C on the 8th. The highest temperature for the summer was recorded on the 30th June with a maximum of 28.9°C .The lowest temperature was recorded in the early hours of the 31st July when the temperature fell to 2.3°C .The strongest wind during August occurred during the afternoon of the 25th when a gust of 31.1mph was recorded.

(Please note because of the heavy rainfall on the 13th the axis on the graph below has changed from that normally shown: i.e. 0-45mm rather than 0-25mm).
