May & Spring 2015

Weather Report – May and Spring 2015

Following the predominately warm dry weather during April in Plymtree it was all change in May when it turned more unsettled and somewhat cooler. The total rainfall I measured for the month was 62.8mm. The average (1981-2010) at Dunkeswell Airfield is 72.3mm. This means that we received 86% of the Dunkeswell average and now the 5th month in a row with below average rainfall. The total spring (Mar, Apr and May) rainfall I recorded was 128.8mm which compares to an average of 227.2mm at Dunkeswell or only 57% of average. The wettest day of May was the 4th with 14.5mm. There were 12 rain days (rainfall ≥ 1mm), which compares to an average of 11.3 days for Dunkeswell, which shows that daily rainfall totals were generally small, in fact the 4th was the only day when I recorded more than 10mm. The highest temperature I recorded during May was 23.9°C on the 23rd. The lowest temperature, 0.3°C was recorded on the 20th. Although no air frosts (air temperature below 0°C) were recorded, there were a few ground frosts (temperature at ground level below 0°C). May was often a windy month with the strongest wind occurring during the afternoon of the 6th when a gust of 41.2mph was recorded by Pete Draper at Normans Green.
