Plymtree's Historic Orchards

Plymtree orchards as they were, and as they are now

From a map of Plymtree dated around 1910 it is easy to see just how much of our village landscape would have been filled with apple orchards. Each farm had its own orchard and cider press, and you can see how the orchards cluster around the farms at Pencepool, Greenend, Tyes, Fordmoor, Clyst William, Hookland, Sanguishayes, Old Bridge and Cook's. Although one or two old cider apple trees remain at some farms the only traditional old orchards that still exist are in the Saxon hamlet of Little Clyst William and Middle Clyst William (highlighted in red at the lower right corner of the map).
